Temporary tacking is when the upholsterer hammer a tacks halfway to hold the fabric in the right position before attaching it definitely with tacks or staples.

Wich tacks should I use for temporary tacking?
14 mm for heavy fabrics and 9 mm tacks for thinner one are the best tack’s size to pick for temporary tacks.
How to remove temporary tacks?
Two tools are useful to remove the temporary tacks. The back side of the upholstery hammers are shaped especially for this but you can also use a tack remover.
